Mahama calls for permanent African representation on UN Security Council

President John Dramani Mahama reiterated his call for Africa to receive permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council during a speech at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24, 2021. Mahama argued that the exclusion of Africa from the council's permanent membership perpetuates long-standing inequalities in global governance.

In his address, Mahama emphasized that Africa's demographic and political significance necessitates its inclusion in discussions surrounding the UN Security Council's composition and reform. He pointed out that Africa is home to approximately 1.5 billion people, representing over 18% of the world's population and serving as the largest regional voting bloc within the UN General Assembly.

Mahama contended that Africa's continued absence from the council's permanent membership was inconsistent with the realities of the 21st century. He maintained that "the injustices of the past remain embedded in today's power structures," and urged Africa to be granted permanent representation on the UN Security Council, including all rights and responsibilities.
