Uganda: Afrigo Band Founder Moses Matovu Dies After Kampala Attack

Veteran Ugandan musician and leader of the popular band Afrigo Band, Moses Matovu, passed away on Thursday morning, September 24, 2026, after reportedly being attacked by unknown assailants in Kampala. The Kabalagala Police registered a suspected murder case involving the musician following the incident. According to Rachael Kawala, a spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, Matovu was allegedly targeted at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division, Kampala District.

He was hospitalized at Kibuli Hospital, where he ultimately died due to his injuries. The task team is currently on the ground to investigate the incident and apprehend the suspected attackers. Efforts are being made to identify the assailants, with further information expected as the investigation advances. Matovu was one of the founding members of Afrigo Band, which was formed in 1975.

He served as a singer, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, playing a significant role in shaping the band into one of Uganda's most enduring and influential musical groups. The loss of Matovu represents a significant blow to Uganda's cultural and entertainment industry.
