Trump welcomes Xi to Washington, looking for a trade win

On Thursday, United States President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House for a state summit aimed at bolstering their relationship and showcasing stable ties between the two nations. This will be the second meeting of the leaders of the world's two largest economies this year, but Xi's first visit to Washington in over a decade. Trump greeted Xi upon arrival on Wednesday evening, marking the first time a U.S. president welcomed a foreign leader at Joint Base Andrews in 11 years.

Xi expressed hope for a more harmonious relationship and emphasized that Beijing and Washington should be "partners, not rivals." For Trump, who values ceremony and strong diplomatic ties, the visit offers an opportunity for high-stakes diplomacy. The summit will feature a lavish ceremony at the White House, State Floor, and Rose Garden.

While major breakthroughs are not expected, analysts speculate that the summit may result in an extension of a trade truce expiring in November and an agreement to address AI-related threats.

Both leaders see advantages in maintaining stable relations, with Trump facing the unpopular Iran war and Xi grappling with domestic economic challenges. However, disagreements remain on key issues such as Taiwan, export controls, and AI. China, which holds Taiwan as a province, is expected to press Trump to halt arms sales to the island. In return, China may offer assistance in pressuring Iran, a longstanding U.S. ally.

Trade deals present a more promising avenue, with Trump seeking victories ahead of the midterms. US Trade Representative Jamie Jamieson Greer announced that the two countries will make "some announcements on agriculture and non-tariff barriers." China is reportedly progressing with a commitment to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft, though no additional orders are confirmed. AI is another potential area for cooperation, given its implications for national security, economic competitiveness, and military capabilities.
