Trump and Xi vow cooperation amid “healthy competition” at the White House

President Donald Trump expressed his "truly great friendship" with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Chinese leader's state visit to the United States. Xi pledged to work with Trump to maintain a stable relationship between the two countries, emphasizing that both nations, as superpowers, have a historic responsibility to advance human development and progress.

Xi highlighted the need for "candid, in-depth, and continued dialogue" to better understand each other and build mutual trust. The two leaders, despite being economic rivals, aimed to discuss key issues during formal talks, focusing on trade relations, foreign affairs, financial cooperation, security, and artificial intelligence, which was identified as a significant topic.

Trump indicated that the US and China were striving for a "more balanced" trade relationship, while Xi expressed hope that Chinese companies would be treated fairly in the US, and China would welcome US companies in China. Both nations agreed on extending the one-year trade truce for an additional two months, working towards a more durable agreement.

Xi addressed the sensitive issue of Taiwan, stating that China views it as a critical concern in the US-China relationship. He also emphasized the importance of AI, stating that both countries have a responsibility to ensure that humans always control AI for the benefit of people. Trump echoed this sentiment, stating that China shares the same position on AI development.

As part of the visit, Xi announced plans to invite 100,000 American youth to study in China over the next five years and send two pandas to the Atlanta zoo, referring to them as "envoys of friendship."
