Trump admin says there were 8 suicide attempts on US aircraft carrier

The Trump administration has admitted to eight suicide attempts by US service members during the USS Abraham Lincoln's deployment to the Middle East, as revealed in a letter to Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao revealed the information in response to concerns over living conditions and mental health issues on the carrier.

Despite claims of deteriorating conditions and poor mental health, the Navy Secretary clarified that no suicides occurred during the deployment. One sailor went overboard in August and was later recovered, while another sailor attempted to do the same in March and was stopped by his shipmates. The Lincoln, which departed from California in November 2025, made a stopover in Thailand after 286 days at sea. Initial reports of the situation aboard the carrier were dismissed by President Trump at the time.
