Syria visitor numbers more than double as international arrivals surge

Syria experienced a remarkable surge in international tourism arrivals between 2025 and 2026, with visitor numbers more than doubling to 3.52 million in the first half of 2026, according to Tourism Minister Mazen Al Salhani. This represents a staggering 448% increase from the previous year, as the country targeted higher-spending markets like the Gulf and Europe to revitalize its tourism sector after years of conflict and isolation.

While arrivals from neighboring Arab nations rose 107%, visitor numbers from Syrians living abroad increased 75%, reflecting a growing diaspora's return to their homeland.

Overall visitor numbers jumped 111% from 1.67 million in 2025 to the current figure, with preliminary data suggesting the third quarter of 2026 may already see figures nearing three million. Al Salhani emphasized that these statistics signify more than just an influx of tourists; they represent a renewed confidence in Syria's potential as a destination, which now translates into tangible benefits like job creation, investment, and long-term economic value.

The composition of visitors is diversifying beyond traditional neighboring countries, with Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK, the US, and Canada showing increased demand. New markets are also emerging, reflecting a more balanced and resilient tourism industry. Gulf nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, will remain key growth drivers due to their close cultural ties and substantial outbound tourism spending.

Syria faces significant capacity constraints, with only about 20,000 hotel rooms currently available, most of which are in the one- and two-star segment. The government is actively seeking investments in hotel development, resorts, and tourism infrastructure to meet growing demand. While visitor numbers are crucial, authorities are also focusing on the economic impact of tourism, aiming to measure visitor expenditure, length of stay, hotel nights, occupancy rates, employment generated, and overall investment.

To enhance the visitor experience, Syria is reviving its heritage sites, such as the Aleppo Citadel, and is set to host the Syria Travel Show in Damascus later in September. The ministry will unveil improvements at this iconic site to showcase the country's rich cultural heritage. The ultimate goal is to transform Syria into a premier international destination that not only attracts visitors but also generates substantial economic value through sustained confidence, connectivity, quality, and memorable experiences.
