Syahadat, Virandeep lead Malaysia past Hong Kong in Asiad cricket

KUALA LUMPUR: Syahadat Ramli and Virandeep Singh played crucial roles in Malaysia's eight-wicket victory over Hong Kong in the Asian Games men's Group B cricket match at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Thursday. Despite Hong Kong's higher ranking, the Malaysian team secured a significant win with 84 runs for two wickets in 12 overs.

Captain Syed Aziz Mubarak and Haziq Aiman contributed six runs each before being dismissed. However, Syahadat and Virandeep were instrumental in Malaysia's chase, contributing 36 and 32 runs respectively. Syahadat displayed his prowess with three fours and two sixes, while Virandeep added two fours and two sixes to his tally. Bowlers Amir Azim Shukor and Pavandeep Singh also played a vital role, each taking three wickets.

The win has virtually secured Malaysia's place in the quarter-finals, with a final match against Oman on Saturday. Syed Aziz praised the team's bowlers for their outstanding performance in restricting Hong Kong to 81 runs. Both the batters and bowlers are in good form, and Syed Aziz attributed the team's success to their collective effort.

Malaysia had previously lost to Hong Kong in the Asian Games qualifier in Singapore, but they managed to beat Oman in the previous Games. The outcome of the Oman-Hong Kong match tomorrow will determine Malaysia's final group position. If Oman wins, Malaysia will finish second and face Pakistan in the quarter-finals. If Malaysia finishes top two, they will face Bangladesh in the quarter-finals.
