Kota Bharu High Court has acquitted a couple accused of drug trafficking, releasing them from a death sentence that had been imposed four years prior. Assistant DPP Azhar Mokhtar ruled in their favor after finding the prosecution unable to prove prima facie evidence against the pair, Syed Mohamad Haizat Syed Hassan, 32, and Nurul Syahira Zakaria, 30.

The duo were charged with distributing 81.77 grams of methamphetamine in an unmarked house in Bachok. They faced charges under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which could carry a death sentence under Section 39B(2) alongside Section 34 of the Penal Code, potentially resulting in life imprisonment and up to 15 years if found guilty.

In his judgment, Azhar noted that the houses were accessible to anyone through a door and windows on top, aside from the kitchen. He also stated that DNA tests on a jacket shielding the drug stash and fingerprint tests on the bundle did not connect them to the drugs found in the Honda C70 motorcycle's engine. During the proceedings, it was revealed that three maintenance workers often using a gas stove near the couple's house were also arrested before them but later released.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy DPP Nik Nur Adila Mat Zaidan, with Syed Mohamad Haizat represented by Azrul Hasyimi Mohammad and Firdaus Zainal Abidin, while Nurul Syahira was represented by Zubairi Salleh.
