‘Sent to mental health facility’ by wife over divorce, Uttarakhand High Court frees man

The Uttarakhand High Court has released a man who had been held at a mental health facility for 42 days, following a dispute over their divorce. The petitioner, who claimed he wanted to return home, was admitted to the facility after his wife admitted him due to alcohol and drug-related issues. However, the court found that the legal requirements for his admission had not been met, as a certification from a psychiatrist or another mental health professional was not provided.

The court also noted that the facility had no legal authority to operate, as its registration had expired. The man was released on September 23, 2025, to go wherever he wished.
