Iran receives Chinese intelligence, military-linked components to bolster drone program - report

Iran has received substantial military and intelligence support from China, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Chinese shipments to Iran's defense ministry include dual-use components and chemical compounds that could be utilized for drones, missile guidance systems, and ballistic missiles, with around 1,300 such shipments documented.

US officials claim Chinese banks and front companies have aided Iran in circumventing US sanctions, resulting in billions of dollars flowing to the regime. Iranian officials have not responded to WSJ inquiries regarding these matters. Despite this, US President Donald Trump has been hesitant to challenge the relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, especially before the United Nations General Assembly.

Senator Elissa Slotkin has urged Trump to address China's support for Iran during his talks with Xi. Evidence suggests Chinese companies are aiding Iran in targeting and killing American troops, maintaining its drone and missile programs, and sustaining its economy. Earlier this month, WSJ reported that Iran had obtained high-resolution satellite imagery of a US base in Jordan from Chinese sources before a July 17 missile attack that killed three American soldiers.

Washington has linked the satellite imagery to the strike but not confirmed direct Chinese government involvement. Iran has also utilized a barter-like arrangement to bypass sanctions on its oil sales and acquire billions of dollars worth of goods from China, including military equipment, according to sources. In July, Reuters reported that Iran was expected to receive up to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defense missile launchers, valued at $60-70 million, to bolster its defenses amid conflict with the US and Israel.
