KUCHING, Sept 24: The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) reported that three of Sarawak's 21 air quality monitoring stations in the capital city were still recording 'Very Unhealthy' air quality levels at 1pm on Thursday. These stations, located in Lundu, Kanowit, and Serian, displayed readings of 219, 216, and 210 respectively.
Among 12 other stations, 10 were registering 'Unhealthy' levels, with the air quality improving slightly in Kuching from 195 to 193. The readings for the remaining stations ranged from 'Moderate' to 'Good'. According to the Department of Environment (DOE), the haze situation is due to persistent dry weather in parts of the southern ASEAN region.
Deputy Director-General Azuri Azizah Saedon cited data from the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) which reported 792 hotspots in Kalimantan and 75 in Sumatra, noting no hotspots in Malaysia. Azuri emphasized that the DOE will not tolerate open burning activities and warned of severe penalties for offenders.
