Rincon de la Victoria politicians bury differences to push Malaga Metro east to El Palo & Axarquia

All political factions on Rincon de la Victoria council united behind a single demand this week: Andalusia’s regional government must prioritize the eastern Metro corridor. Councillors from various parties, including PP, PSOE, Por Mi Pueblo, Con Rincon, and Vox, voted in unison on Thursday, September 24, to urge the Junta de Andalucia to treat a line extending to El Palo and then on to Rincon as the next big project for Malaga’s underground network.

The chamber unanimously adopted the motion as a joint statement, highlighting the urgency of the matter. With demand studies and technical options already in hand, officials are considering three potential directions for the expansion: the eastern coast, Ciudad Jardin to the north, or a branch to Malaga TechPark. Building such a tunnel and metro network would significantly alleviate traffic congestion in and around Malaga city, providing easier and faster access to Axarquia, Maria Zambrano train station, and enhancing connectivity to the rest of Spain via coach links and improved airport access.

Mayor Francisco Salado emphasized that every administration owes Rincon a historic debt on infrastructure. Western Malaga boasts high-capacity dual carriageways, commuter rail, and a denser public transport system, while the eastern approaches continue to funnel thousands of cars into a daily bottleneck on the A-7. With a population of over 50,000 registered residents, Rincon functions as a satellite town for Malaga, exacerbating the heavy traffic on the motorway.

The town hall seeks the backing of neighboring Axarquia municipalities before the Junta publishes its final viability verdict. While opposition speakers acknowledged that the consensus transcends party labels, the Metro link would undoubtedly transform how people access jobs, colleges, and hospitals across the eastern belt. Rincon is now formally urging the regional government to consider territorial balance and traffic saturation when selecting the next works.
