Priest killed and four injured in knife attack at Polish abbey

A priest was killed and four others sustained injuries in a knife attack that took place at a Catholic abbey in Jarosław, southeast Poland. Following the incident, a 31-year-old Ukrainian man was apprehended. Polish President Karol Nawrocki expressed shock and called for a strong response from the state, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also conveyed his dismay, stating that the perpetrator must be held fully accountable.

The attack unfolded when the assailant stabbed a priest in a nearby cafe before proceeding to target four individuals inside the abbacy itself. The motive behind the attack is currently under investigation by Polish authorities. Polish police reported that four men and a woman were stabbed during the Thursday morning assault on the abbey grounds. The priest's identity has not been made public.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, psychological assistance has been extended to all those impacted by the incident. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński pledged support for the victims, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk vowed that the perpetrator will face the full extent of Polish law. Similarly, Ukrainian President Zelensky reiterated that the perpetrator must bear full responsibility according to the law, emphasizing that Ukraine stands ready for a swift and thorough investigation.

The Ukrainian embassy in Poland also condemned the attack, urging the nation to come together, uphold respect for human life, and refrain from allowing grief to morph into hatred or further violence. They stressed that responsibility for a crime must be determined solely on the basis of law.

Poland has recently experienced several violent incidents involving its citizens and Ukrainians, many of whom have fled their homeland in response to Russia's full-scale invasion.
