The good news is that no personal information was compromised. OpenAI informed the government about the breach three months after it occurred, sending an email to its public email account on September 10, 2022. The Australian Cyber Security Centre was notified on September 15, 2022. The incident highlights the need for the Australian government to address its information security shortcomings swiftly and transparently, with full accountability.

Australians should demand the creation of independent measures to protect themselves from the new front in the information war. If the government determines that ministerial oversight failed to protect Medicare or any other compromised dataset, heads must roll publicly.
