Malaysia-China ties built on trust, friendship, not just diplomacy, says Anwar

In Hangzhou, Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that China-Malaysia ties have transcended mere diplomatic relations, evolving into a friendship grounded in trust and mutual confidence. Anwar highlighted this foundation as a key reason for Malaysia's deep commitment to its relationship with China, particularly under President Xi Jinping's leadership in areas such as development, governance, and shared prosperity.

He noted that Malaysia values the friendship with China, given their shared interests across various domains.

This relationship, Anwar stressed, extends beyond ordinary diplomatic ties, being based on trust and confidence. He made these remarks in response to a welcoming address by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who was present during Anwar's bilateral meeting at the West Lake State Guesthouse. The visit, part of Anwar's three-day working trip to Shanghai and Hangzhou, also saw the participation of Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Johari Abdul Ghani, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, and Malaysian Ambassador to China Norman Muhamad.

Anwar acknowledged that Malaysia-China relations sometimes faced scrutiny, including regarding Malaysia's stance on China and the South China Sea issue. However, he reiterated that the government's position was grounded in mutual interests and the strong friendship between the two nations. Premier Li Qiang, in his welcoming speech, expressed sincere appreciation for Malaysia's appreciation of this friendship and its commitment to honoring their commitments.

Anwar noted that his visit to Hangzhou was aimed not only at discussing bilateral ties but also at engaging with Li on more substantive issues. Li highlighted potential areas for strengthened cooperation between Malaysia and China, including digital trade, vocational skills, and science and technology, suggesting that these could significantly enhance bilateral relations.

He also referenced President Xi Jinping's state visit to Malaysia in April, which Li said marked a new chapter in the China-Malaysia relationship, emphasizing China's priority in placing the development of its ties with Malaysia at the forefront of its neighbourhood diplomacy.
