Mahama outlines Ghana’s priorities ahead of 2027 AU chairmanship

President John Dramani Mahama has outlined Ghana's priorities ahead of the country's upcoming role as Chair of the African Union in January 2027. Speaking at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, September 24, Mahama highlighted Ghana's commitment to deeper continental integration, stronger African cooperation on peace, security, and economic development.

As part of this agenda, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) would be a central focus, with Ghana aiming to hasten its implementation to boost intra-African trade and industrialization.

Mahama emphasized that Ghana would leverage its AU Chairmanship to champion continental integration, expedite the AfCFTA's implementation, and work towards peace and stability in conflict areas. He assured the UN General Assembly that Ghana would ensure Africa presents a unified, undivided, and confident voice on the global stage.

President Mahama also connected Ghana's impending AU leadership to the continent's efforts to secure greater representation in global decision-making bodies, including the push for a permanent African seat on the UN Security Council. He stressed that Africa must approach global negotiations with increased unity, particularly on issues of trade, financing, natural resources, climate change, and international security.

In March 2027, Ghana will celebrate its 70th Independence Anniversary, providing the nation with two significant continental milestones in the same year.
