Mahama highlights Ghana’s economic recovery, healthcare expansion at UN

President John Dramani Mahama addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing Ghana's economic recovery and domestic initiatives aimed at improving living standards. His administration's "Resetting Ghana Agenda" focuses on fiscal discipline, infrastructure development, industrialization, social protection, and healthcare access.

Mahama highlighted how the government's economic measures have restored growth, reduced inflation, stabilized the cedi, and decreased public debt, describing the progress as a "Ghanaian miracle". He stressed that economic growth must benefit ordinary citizens, not just show favorable macroeconomic indicators. The administration is implementing the Big Push Programme to improve roads, digital connectivity, schools, and healthcare facilities, as well as the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme to boost industrial activity and job creation.

Additionally, the Free Primary Health Care Programme, launched in April 2026, will initially target 150 underserved districts before expanding nationwide by 2028. The President also mentioned the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, or MahamaCare, which provides additional support for specialized treatment for conditions like renal failure, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.

Looking ahead, Ghana will use its upcoming chairmanship of the African Union in 2027 to promote continental integration, accelerate the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), support peace and security efforts, and strengthen Africa's collective voice on the international stage.
