Macron says France sees signs Russia is preparing to mobilize 300,000 more men

French President Emmanuel Macron stated on TF1 that tensions between Russia and Europe are escalating due to Russia's increased hostile actions. He noted that Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia since February 2022, and Europe itself are experiencing a rise in hostile acts from Russia. The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has not provided France with details about a supposed Russian plan to launch drones from civilian ships to target countries in southern Europe.

Journalists inquired if France could be targeted by Russian drones, echoing Germany's claim of Russia preparing to carry out sabotage at Leipzig Airport using drones. Macron affirmed that Russia perceives Europe as a strategic resource for Ukraine due to European support for Ukraine. He emphasized that France has encountered various forms of information operations and cyberattacks from Russia over the years.

Macron acknowledged the possibility that Russia might decide to mobilize 300,000 individuals and highlighted several indicators suggesting Russia is gearing up for such a move. He questioned if Russia would publicly announce this decision. On September 18, Macron convened with French political party leaders and instructed the government to devise a plan for safeguarding critical infrastructure, such as defense facilities, against drone and cyberattacks. Macron accused Russia of attempting to coerce European nations and undermine support for Ukraine.
