KP Cabinet Approves Police Act 2026, Shifts Key Powers From IGP to Government

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet recently passed the revised Police Act 2026, altering the powers of the provincial police chief and expanding the government's involvement in police matters. This decision came during an emergency cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. The revised draft will soon be submitted to the KP Assembly for further legislative steps.

With the new framework, the chief minister will oversee the Police Policy Board, while the provincial government will have more control over police policy, management, and finances. The appointment and transfer of senior officers, including regional and district police officers, will now require approval from the government or the chief minister. Additionally, police will not be authorized to directly respond to legal matters; their replies must first receive approval from the Law Department and Advocate General's Office.

If the Inspector General of Police (IGP) is absent, the Additional IGP Headquarters will serve as acting chief. Reports suggest the government can also take steps to replace the IGP if they are unsatisfied with their performance. These changes stem from disputes between the KP government and police leadership, with the government expressing discontent following the IGP's unsolicited response in the Islamabad High Court regarding a proposed long march without prior consultation from the provincial government.

The legislation still needs approval from the KP Assembly before becoming law.
