King Misuzulu vows to fight GBV

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, the AmaZulu King, has pledged to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and vowed to protect women. He made these remarks during the Umkhosi Welembe celebration at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, near Durban. This event, also known as Shaka's Day, honored the founder of the AmaZulu nation, King Shaka, who died in 1828. Thousands of people, including maidens, Amabutho, and members of the Nazareth Baptist Church, attended the festivities.

King Misuzulu expressed his disappointment in men's failure to protect women and children, describing GBV as a curse they must eradicate from their country. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli echoed the King's sentiments, urging the King to deploy men to address the issue of GBV, stating that it is damaging the province's image and the lives of women and children.

Young people present at the celebration appreciated the event for imparting knowledge about their culture and history, and for fostering community connections. Chief of the !Xam Ronelia Hutchinson emphasized the importance of unity among South Africans, regardless of their diverse origins, as the event brought people together in celebration.
