Dubai: The inaugural Jashe and Sahnah Festival in Kalba has commenced, uniting over 85 families dedicated to preserving the UAE's coastal maritime and culinary heritage while generating economic prospects for local producers. Coordinated by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) in partnership with Kalba City Municipality, the festival spans from September 24 to September 27 at Al Samar in Kalba's Al Ghail Suburb.
This pioneering event highlights Jashe - traditionally sun-dried fish - and Sahnah, a fermented fish condiment integral to east coast communities' livelihoods and food customs. Set over 4,800 square meters, the four-day event brings together these families, 10 government institutions, six national fishing supply companies, and processing facilities. Attendees can observe the traditional preparation of seafood and the transformation of dried fish into Sahnah powder.
Beyond cultural preservation, the festival aims to transform these traditional industries into commercially viable ventures by providing families and entrepreneurs with new avenues to showcase, promote, and expand their product markets. Three competitions with cash prizes are central to the festivities. Participants aged 18 and above can vie for the Best Jashe/Sahnah Product competition, using authentic local preparation techniques.
On Friday, teams of two to four members will compete for the Best Innovative Jashe/Sahnah Dish, incorporating Jashe or Sahnah as key ingredients. Saturday will spotlight younger generations in the Best Quality Jashe/Sahnah for Children competition, requiring active participation from participants aged seven to 15 in preparing their entries and sharing their knowledge with judges. Winners will be recognized during the closing ceremony on Sunday.
In addition to these competitions, the festival features daily educational workshops promoting marine sustainability, responsible fishing, and the conservation of fish stocks and marine ecosystems. Modern fishing vessels and technologies will be displayed alongside family-oriented entertainment and educational activities, blending traditional knowledge with contemporary advancements in the fishing industry.
Media sponsor Sharqiya Kalba TV supports the event, which is accessible daily from 4:30pm to 10pm, offering residents and visitors a chance to immerse themselves in local maritime traditions while bolstering the fishing community and productive families in Kalba.
