Japan's Overnight Trains Make a Comeback

Japan's overnight trains are experiencing a resurgence in popularity as railway companies introduce special services that provide affordable travel combined with unique experiences. The country's first overnight Shinkansen service, the Tokaido Lumiere Express, made its debut during the Silver Week holidays, operating between Osaka and Tokyo. Passengers spent the night aboard the train, enjoying views of Mount Fuji as it traversed through Kyoto and Nagoya before arriving in Shizuoka.

The overnight train tickets were priced at approximately 17,000 yen, slightly more than regular Shinkansen tickets, but the experience was deemed worthwhile by many. Railway enthusiasts were particularly excited by the opportunity to travel on a high-speed train at night, while others appreciated the chance to travel after dark.

The growing popularity of overnight travel has led railway companies to develop new services that provide premium accommodation and activities. East Japan Railway plans to introduce a new limited express called Luna Azul in the next fiscal year, featuring private compartments and lounge facilities.

The renewed interest in overnight travel has also brought attention to the unique experiences associated with nighttime travel. Travelers have expressed excitement over night views of various locations, such as Hakodate and the illuminated cityscape during concert tours. This trend has also led to the introduction of products designed to enhance the comfort of long journeys, such as inflatable neck pillows for leg care.

As competition among railway companies increases, overnight rail travel could become a distinctive and appealing segment of Japan's tourism market.
