Have we reached the limits of warfare?

The United Nations often faces criticism of its General Assembly being a mere forum for debate. However, a recent meeting in New York between US and Iranian officials suggests otherwise. Despite ongoing conflict in the Middle East, this meeting, facilitated by Qatar and Pakistan, highlights the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide aptly noted the "limitations of warfare," emphasizing that military might eventually needs to be translated into a workable agreement for both sides. In today's world, where wars often lack clear victors, negotiation is the key to ending conflicts.

While diplomacy can be perceived as a sign of defeat, it is actually the means by which most modern wars conclude. The process of rebuilding institutions, restoring trade, and fostering trust among nations can take a generation. This is why the UAE remains committed to dialogue, even after facing repeated attacks from Iran.

The alternative to diplomacy is not victory but increased costs and suffering for all involved parties. While progress in mediation can be slow and fragile, the consequences of not engaging in dialogue can be far more devastating. If the UN General Assembly week leads to even the beginning of talks between Washington and Tehran, it would be a significant step toward resolution. Ultimately, escalation has no other path to follow.
