Google is sending an AI data center into space — with help from Elon Musk’s SpaceX

Google is planning to launch AI data center into space, with the help of SpaceX, according to an experiment called Project Suncatcher. The project aims to determine if Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) can survive the harsh conditions of space, such as extreme temperatures, radiation, and launch forces. If successful, it could pave the way for giant solar-powered satellites packed with AI chips, connected through high-speed optical links.

This idea is driven by the growing demand for computing power and electricity to support AI models and processes. The first test will involve a prototype satellite carrying TPUs, which will experience intense forces during launch and harsh radiation in space.
