Ghana’s proposed national airline to explore South America, Caribbean routes – President Mahama

Ghana's proposed national airline is set to consider direct routes to South America and the Caribbean, as the country aims to enhance its aviation connectivity beyond the African continent. President John Dramani Mahama revealed this during informal talks with the President of Suriname, Dr Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Mahama suggested that establishing connections with the Caribbean and South American regions could become part of the future route network of Ghana's national airline, presenting fresh opportunities for trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchanges.

Despite Ghana's considerable distance from the region, Mahama pointed out that travel times to parts of the Caribbean and South America make direct air connectivity more feasible. Consequently, the proposed national airline could target markets across the Atlantic, aiming to position Ghana as a strategic aviation and business hub. This initiative is also anticipated to strengthen Ghana's historical and cultural ties with the Caribbean and the broader South American region.

The discussions between Mahama and Geerlings-Simons also centered on deepening bilateral relations between Ghana and Suriname. The President highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation between the two nations, particularly in trade, investment, tourism, and connectivity. Mahama emphasized that existing agreements between Ghana and Suriname could serve as the foundation for stronger relations.

The expansion of air links is being viewed as part of Ghana's broader strategy to foster economic and diplomatic ties with countries across the Atlantic.
