El-Rufai laments silence of friends, ex-colleagues amid his legal, political troubles

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has expressed regret over the silence of some of his former colleagues, friends and family members amid his current legal and political challenges. In a statement titled "My Relationships and the Aftermath," dated September 23, 2026, El-Rufai said he stood by his supporters even at a "considerable personal cost."

Despite his unwavering support, El-Rufai noted that some individuals have now gone silent, refusing to acknowledge their relationship or attempting to rewrite the past. He attributed his actions to his Islamic faith, Arewa upbringing, personal values and conscience, stressing that those choices were made freely and that he is still responsible for them.

El-Rufai acknowledged that people may choose to speak, remain silent, deny relationships or "try rewriting history." He emphasized that he has always supported people and stood up for causes he believed in, without expecting praise or gratitude. El-Rufai also mentioned that the people he has supported are now free to make their own decisions since the situation has changed, and some may choose to speak while others may remain silent.
