EduGreen Connect programme will link jobs, skills and education

A new national platform, EduGreen Connect, was unveiled on 24 September to connect jobs, skills, and education. This initiative, part of a strategy to link employment, skill development, and education, was launched by Ireland's Knowledge Centre for Carbon, Climate, and Community Action. The platform, spearheaded by Munster Technological University in collaboration with University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin, provides comprehensive information on sustainability skills, careers, education, and training. This resource allows individuals to discover new opportunities and learning paths.

EduGreen Connect's data on the labor market will assist employers and educational institutions in identifying areas where skills are most required, as well as the necessary information to align workforce demand with the relevant skills and training. The platform's representatives highlighted that the launch coincides with significant workforce demands in sectors like renewable energy, residential retrofit, and electric vehicles, all crucial for Ireland to meet its climate targets by 2030.

Additionally, demand is observed in finance, construction, energy, transport, engineering, and other sectors, reflecting the increasing correlation between sustainability and core business priorities, including efficiency, resilience, innovation, and resource management.

Dr. Helena McMahon, the director of EduGreen Connect at Munster Technological University, emphasized during the launch event themed 'People and Platforms: Building Ireland’s Green Skills Ecosystem' that the platform consolidates information that has been challenging to access. This includes understanding what employers seek, the career paths those skills can lead to, and the educational and training options available across Ireland.

The broader impact of EduGreen Connect is to enable Ireland's education and training system to respond swiftly to evolving skill requirements. In scenarios where employer demand is high, but provision is limited, there may be a need for new or expanded learning opportunities. Conversely, where provision is already robust, the focus might shift towards aiding individuals in discovering and utilizing existing resources.
