Donald Trump rolls out red carpet for Xi Jinping as US, China eye deals on trade, AI and rare earths

On a state visit to the United States, Chinese President Xi Jinping was greeted with a rare planeside welcome by US President Donald Trump at the airport. The leaders of the world's two largest economies, who are expected to discuss trade, artificial intelligence, tariffs, rare-earth minerals, and military ties, were joined by their spouses at the ceremony.

A 30-meter-long red carpet was laid at the bottom of the staircase leading to Xi's plane, and a 21-person honor guard was stationed on either side. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump stood near the staircase, shaking hands with Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan. Despite calls for a slowdown in AI development, Trump dismissed warnings as a "hoax," arguing that restrictions would benefit China.

Both nations recognize the implications of AI for national security, economic power, and technological leadership. While discussions on tariff reductions are expected, expectations for a major trade agreement are low due to the complexity of ongoing negotiations. Rare-earth minerals, crucial for technology manufacturing, serve as an essential bargaining point in trade discussions.
