Databricks acquires spreadsheet startup Row Zero to enhance its AI capabilities

Databricks has acquired Row Zero, a spreadsheet startup, to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities. The deal's financial terms were not disclosed. Row Zero, headquartered in Seattle, raised $13 million prior to the acquisition, which included investments from local startup funds and Wes McKinney, a renowned software engineer.

Excel spreadsheets typically support up to 1,048,576 rows, while Google Sheets can accommodate approximately ten times that amount. However, Row Zero goes a step further, enabling users to create spreadsheets with up to 1 billion rows. This is made possible because the platform processes every spreadsheet on a dedicated Amazon EC2 instance.

The high data storage capability of Row Zero allows it to support a broader range of data analytics use cases. The company's co-founders, Breck Fesen and Nick End, previously held technical roles at the cloud giant before launching Row Zero in 2021. Row Zero can filter, reorganize, summarize, and visualize millions of rows nearly instantaneously.

For more complex data science tasks, users can employ Python, which includes libraries such as pandas, developed by Row Zero's investor Wes McKinney. Row Zero is also equipped with built-in connectors that integrate with cloud data platforms like Databricks. When a record's original version changes, Row Zero automatically updates the spreadsheet.

Additionally, Row Zero offers an AI assistant that automates tasks like summarizing and visualizing data. Databricks plans to incorporate this spreadsheet-based interface into its AI assistant, Genie, enhancing its functionality. The AI assistant comes in three forms: Genie One for analyzing datasets with natural language prompts, Genie Agents for creating customized versions of Genie One with curated datasets, and Genie Code, which is tailored for developers.

These enhancements will be powered by three other Databricks products: Genie Ontology, Unity Catalog, and Unity Gateway. Genie Ontology helps the assistant interpret company-specific business terms, while Unity Catalog and Unity Gateway ensure AI initiatives adhere to an organization's governance policies. Databricks co-founder and Vice President of Engineering, Patrick Wendell, stated that incorporating a seamless spreadsheet experience is crucial as more teams adopt Genie. Row Zero will continue to operate as a standalone product.
