Crombie proposes subway extension into Mississauga in election bid

Mississauga mayoral candidate Bonnie Crombie is advocating for the extension of Toronto’s subway system to Mississauga as part of her transportation plan, dubbed Mississauga Moves 2.0. The proposal aims to connect downtown Mississauga with Toronto via Line 2, reducing traffic congestion and improving public transit access. While the subway extension would not commence immediately, Crombie intends to spend her first year in office working towards a formal partnership with the provincial government, Metrolinx, the TTC, and Toronto to assess the extension's feasibility.

This would involve examining potential routes, station locations, ridership projections, costs, and construction options. Crombie also suggested that a portion of the route could be built above ground along the Dundas corridor, potentially lowering costs. The plan aligns with Toronto’s ongoing transit expansion projects west of Kipling and neighboring municipalities’ investments in rapid transit.

However, the subway extension’s reality remains uncertain and would require significant support from both Toronto and Queen’s Park. Meanwhile, Crombie is also targeting the completion of the Hazel McCallion Line LRT by December 31, 2028, following years of construction delays. She aims to push for a detailed timeline of remaining construction, testing, and commissioning milestones within her first 100 days.

Additionally, Crombie plans to enhance everyday transit service, including 15-minute-or-better service on major MiWay routes and 10-minute service on the busiest corridors. The candidate also proposes a new transit network centered around workers commuting to and from Toronto Pearson International Airport, addressing one of the region’s largest employment hubs.
