Chhagan Bujhbal discharged in Mumbai University library case; all cases against him over

Maharashtra's state minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal has been acquitted by a special court in a case concerning alleged irregularities in the construction of a library at Mumbai University. This ruling discharges him from all pending corruption cases filed by the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) during his tenure as Public Works Department Minister from 2004 to 2014.

Additionally, Chhagan Bhujbal was acquitted in January 2026 in a case brought by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ACB had accused him and others of causing a loss of over Rs 75 crore to the state while benefiting a private firm. They alleged that Chhagan Bhujbal, as Public Works Department Minister, disregarded objections and the feasibility report for the library proposal and received kickbacks for favoring a specific developer.

The case also included allegations of leasing prime government land at a nominal price. According to the ACB, in 1986, the Mumbai University allocated a portion of its Kalina campus land to the state government on the condition that a central library would be constructed there.
