“Can the patient feel the difference?” — GMTF boss challenges health leaders to turn strategy into impact

Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), has urged health sector leaders to focus on the tangible impact of their decisions on patients, rather than merely presenting policies and strategies. At a conference themed "From Strategy to Impact," she emphasized that the ultimate measure of success in healthcare leadership should be whether patients can "feel the difference" in the quality, accessibility, and humanity of care they receive.

Darko-Opoku stressed that strategies and policies are merely starting points, and true success can only be judged by the improvements they bring to the bedside. She challenged leaders to recognize their influential role in shaping entire wards, hospitals, and the careers of young professionals, urging them to lead with empathy, encourage learning from mistakes, and maintain high professional standards.

Healthcare, she argued, must remain human, and investments in infrastructure and equipment must be properly managed and maintained to deliver lasting value. She also called for stronger representation of nursing and midwifery leaders in health policy formulation, emphasizing that frontline knowledge of patient care can provide invaluable insights to support better decision-making.
