Andreessen Horowitz introduces AI school as a college alternative

Andreessen Horowitz, a prominent Silicon Valley investment firm, is introducing an unconventional alternative to traditional college education in the form of an AI-focused academy. Titled the Horowitz Andreessen Academy, this unaccredited program aims to equip aspiring AI and technology entrepreneurs with the necessary skills to build products and services using artificial intelligence.

The curriculum focuses on practical learning, with students not taking tests or being assigned homework. Instead, they will work on real projects, guided by tech entrepreneurs and industry experts. Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to serve as an instructor or guest lecturer for the academy.

Located in San Francisco, the academy is open for applications and will admit 50 students for a one-year program starting in fall 2027. The tuition is free, making it an attractive option for those looking to enter the fast-evolving AI industry without incurring the high costs associated with traditional education.

The academy's co-founder, Ben Horowitz, emphasizes the need for a new educational approach that doesn't mirror the Industrial Revolution model. He believes the academy will pioneer the right training methods for the AI revolution.

The program is backed by a $42 million investment from several prominent technology companies and investors, including Anthropic, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Palantir. Andreessen Horowitz, a significant player in AI startups, has also raised $1 billion for a new venture fund focused on the physical buildout of AI.

Plans are underway for the academy to seek regulatory approvals for a two-year program, set to commence in the fall of 2028, with tuition expected to mirror that of elite private universities.
