Amazon Kuiper licensed for private satellite telecommunications network in Vietnam

On September 23, Amazon Kuiper was granted a license by the Minister of Science and Technology in Vietnam to establish a private satellite telecommunications network. The license was presented to an Amazon Kuiper representative in New York by Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan, accompanied by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam.

This permission enables Amazon Kuiper Vietnam to set up a private network using satellite transmission for testing and evaluating the quality of locally manufactured customer terminal equipment. The network will be interconnected with ground infrastructure across Vietnam, providing nationwide coverage. The license requires adherence to telecommunications regulations, radio frequency standards, technical specifications, service quality, and information security protocols.

This move by Amazon aims to bolster the development of high-tech industries, broaden supply chains, and fortify partnerships in the creation of advanced connectivity infrastructure. Established in 2024, Amazon Kuiper Vietnam serves as the company's official entity in Vietnam, specializing in satellite connectivity. Its project, Amazon Leo, is a broadband network comprising over 3,000 low-orbit satellites designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to remote areas inaccessible through conventional infrastructure.

During a working visit to the US on September 22, Minister Quan met with executives from prominent companies such as Anthropic, Amazon, and Oracle. These executives proposed several avenues for collaboration between Vietnam and these firms, focusing on artificial intelligence, data centers, digital transformation support for businesses, technology workforce training and development, and exploring the establishment of Centres of Excellence within Vietnam.
