57 Niger security personnel reportedly dead in seperate attacks

On September 23, 2026, a tragic day unfolded in Niger as 57 members of the nation's defence and security forces lost their lives in two separate attacks. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the devastating casualties transpired in two distinct locations: Dabagu, Tahoua Region, and Abala-Filingué, Tillabéri Region.

In Dabagu, 38 soldiers of the Nigerien Armed Forces fell victim to an attack by Islamic State militants. The militants targeted a military position, resulting in a severe loss of life. Tragically, several soldiers were reported missing following the assault, and the bodies of some of those killed were being transported to Tahoua. In an effort to swiftly handle the aftermath, the remains of the deceased were evacuated to Niamey via helicopter.

The second attack took place around Abala-Filingué, Tillabéri, where 19 gendarmes perished in an assault attributed to Islamic State militants. The assailants launched a fierce assault, resulting in the untimely demise of these courageous gendarmes. Similar to the first incident, multiple soldiers were also missing after the attack, and the bodies of some of the killed were being transported to Tahoua.
