Xavier basketball has deeper roster and one key question to answer

Xavier head coach Richard Pitino is pleased with the depth and size of his second-year team, as they opened fall practice on September 21 at Cintas Center. The Musketeers boast one of the most talented incoming transfer classes in the nation, with seven players joining from other programs. This roster, along with a few key returners and a strong high school class, has fueled Pitino's excitement for the 2026-27 season.

Last season, Xavier finished with a 15-18 record and was tied for last in the Big East. The team's biggest issue was their defense, which struggled with effective field goal percentage and allowed over 80 points per game. Focus was placed on defensive improvements and rebounding during the offseason, which Pitino believes will significantly increase the team's defensive capabilities.

While improvements in defense and rebounding are expected, the question remains whether these changes will affect Xavier's offensive identity. The added size could lead to a shift in spacing and tempo on the offensive end. However, with five double-digit scorers returning from the portal, including Texas A&M's Ruben Dominguez and Jovan Milicevic, Pitino's team should have the offensive firepower to address these concerns.

Milicevic, who averaged 12.4 points and shot 45.8% from three-point range last season, will likely take on a bigger role as the team's primary deep threat. Freshman Kalek House, the brother of former Xavier player Jaelen House, will also play a significant role in shaping the team's future.

Xavier's preseason schedule includes three exhibition games against high-major opponents, providing an opportunity to test their newfound defensive prowess and maintain their offensive capabilities before the regular season opener on November 2.
