WRC to trial helmet camera at season finale

The World Rally Championship (WRC) is set to trial a Formula 1-style helmet camera at the season finale Rally Sardinia, aiming to enhance its television broadcast. Helmet cameras have gained popularity in circuit racing, with Formula E, Supercars, and F1 incorporating the technology to provide more engaging coverage for fans. The WRC previously experimented with the technology in 2024, collaborating with Italian helmet manufacturer Stilo on a prototype.

However, drivers were not allowed to use the cameras during the events. At the Rally Sardinia, the WRC will conduct a live test using an integrated helmet camera produced by Bell Racing Helmets, which has received approval from the FIA and mirrors the technology found in F1. If the test proves successful, the WRC may incorporate the helmet camera into the live broadcast during the rally weekend.

WRC CEO Eric Boiullier revealed that the organization plans to strengthen its media department to deliver fresh content and approaches. The trial is set to take place on Thursday and Friday, with one of the M-Sport cars featuring the camera. The WRC aims to improve storytelling and broadcasting quality, incorporating more behind-the-scenes footage and showcasing new personalities and drivers.
