UNGA 81: Shettima joins world leaders, to present Nigeria’s position Thursday

Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, joined global leaders at the United Nations headquarters in New York for the commencement of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Representing President Bola Tinubu, Shettima is leading Nigeria's delegation during this significant international gathering. Shettima is set to present Nigeria's stance on key global matters and President Tinubu's priorities for international institutions, sustainable development, peace and security, climate action, and a fair global economic system at a scheduled national statement on Thursday, September 24.

Shettima's arrival at the General Assembly Hall coincided with his attendance at a welcome breakfast hosted by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who met with heads of delegations and their spouses. Accompanying Shettima were the governors of Zamfara, Dauda Lawal; Kwara, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; and Rivers, Siminalayi Fubara, as well as other high-ranking government officials, including the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retired); Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; and Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim.

The General Debate, which will run from September 22 to 28 under the theme "Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all," kicked off with remarks by Guterres and contributions from world leaders such as Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Shettima's national statement will address the President's vision for Nigeria's role in addressing global challenges and promoting reform in international organizations and sustainable development.
