UAE ranks fourth globally for nuclear facility protection

The United Arab Emirates has secured a notable position in global nuclear security, ranking fourth among 48 countries for safeguarding nuclear facilities against sabotage, according to the latest Nuclear Threat Initiative Security Index. The country also secured a joint 15th place among 154 nations and territories for preventing nuclear material theft, scoring 85 out of 100, reflecting a two-point improvement from its 2023 baseline.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative, in collaboration with Economist Enterprise, assessed countries based on various factors including physical protection, cybersecurity, international norms, and domestic capacity. The UAE's performance showed significant improvement in security and control measures, with its score rising from 66 in 2023 to 86 in 2026.

This progress is attributed to several advancements, such as enhanced nuclear facility protection requirements, updated cybersecurity provisions, stricter personnel vetting, and measures to bolster preparedness and resilience.

Hamad Al Kaabi, the director general of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, attributed the UAE's high ranking to the nation's long-term commitment to a robust nuclear security regime. He emphasized the ongoing need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of evolving threats. "The nuclear security environment continues to evolve, requiring regulators, operators, and relevant national entities to remain vigilant and prepared for emerging risks," he stated.

Additionally, the 2026 index highlighted the UAE among 12 countries identified as a new driving force for global nuclear security progress. This recognition is given to nations that have demonstrated sustained domestic improvements, supported other governments, and enhanced their engagement with international institutions.
