UAE jumps to fourth globally in nuclear security ranking

The United Arab Emirates has climbed to the fourth position globally in the 2026 Nuclear Security Index, released by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) for 48 countries evaluated on their security measures for nuclear facilities. This ranking highlights the UAE's ongoing development of its nuclear security system, its dedication to reinforcing protection of its peaceful nuclear program, and its ability to counteract various risks.

The UAE also secured the 15th position among 154 countries involved in global efforts to prevent nuclear material theft, scoring 85 out of 100, a 2-point increase from the recalculated 2023 baseline. The 2026 Nuclear Security Index, an independent assessment by the Nuclear Threat Initiative in collaboration with Economist Impact, grades countries and jurisdictions in various nuclear security aspects such as security measures, standards, commitments, and capabilities, plus the overall risk environment.

The assessment revealed the UAE's significant progress in security and control measures, with its score jumping from 66 points in 2023 to 86 points in 2026. Factors contributing to the UAE's improved ranking include stricter nuclear facility protection and cybersecurity requirements, stricter personnel screening, and additional readiness measures.

Hamad Al Kaabi, Director-General of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), stated that the UAE's high ranking in the nuclear security index underscores its commitment to developing a robust and sustainable nuclear security system, as well as its effectiveness in maintaining the highest standards of nuclear security.

The UAE continues to collaborate with national partners and international organizations to uphold the highest nuclear security standards.
