Trump reaffirms commitment to dialogue with N. Korea during summit with Lee: Seoul

New York - South Korean President Lee Jae Myung reaffirmed his role as a catalyst for peace on the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, pledging swift efforts to restart dialogue between the United States and North Korea. This commitment was made during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, as U.S. President Donald Trump endeavors to rekindle his own diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Meanwhile, inter-Korean relations have been stagnant. Lee expressed hope for the resumption of dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea without delay, stating that they will establish groundwork for this dialogue to evolve into a broader conversation aimed at ending the war on the Korean Peninsula and transitioning into a peace regime.

The two Koreas have remained technically in a state of war since the 1950-53 Korean War concluded with an armistice, not a peace treaty. President Trump's resolute stance, according to Lee, has recently created a valuable opportunity for change, referring to Trump's ongoing interest in dialogue.
