Trump invites Putin to G20 summit in Miami

President Donald Trump has extended an invitation for Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the G20 summit in Miami in December, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The move comes as Washington attempts to negotiate an end to Russia's conflict in Ukraine, with Trump emphasizing his efforts to engage both sides in resolving the war.

Rubio stated that inviting Putin is an opportunity for him to interact not only with President Trump but also with other global leaders, hoping for his acceptance. The top US diplomat made this announcement following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who reiterated that Moscow would not cease its "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Lavrov accused Europe of wanting to use a pause in fighting to bolster Kyiv with weapons. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to address the UN, likely requesting improved air defenses against Russian drone and missile attacks. Meanwhile, 51 nations, including France, the UK, Japan, and Canada, reaffirmed their support for Ukraine in a joint declaration at the UN General Assembly, condemning Russia's blockade of Ukrainian grain exports and calling for measures to protect commercial shipping and critical infrastructure.

Rubio suggested a potential energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, noting that both sides have expressed interest in such an arrangement. Zelensky indicated willingness to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities if Moscow agrees to do the same, following Trump's appeal.
