Trump greets Xi Jinping at plane as Chinese leader arrives for state visit

US President Donald Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping a warm welcome at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday evening, marking the start of Xi's state visit to the United States. This encounter comes amid heightened US-China tensions, particularly concerning artificial intelligence development and broader geopolitical issues. For their second meeting this year, the US president is expected to lavish Xi with attention, including a 21-gun salute on the South Lawn of the White House, a private tea, and a tour of the National Archives.

The visit will consist of two days, filled with ceremonial events and opportunities for bilateral discussions.

However, despite the symbolism of the visit, tensions between the two nations, especially regarding AI development, are likely to persist. The White House has extended invitations to leading tech industry executives to attend the state dinner on Thursday. Among them are representatives from companies such as OpenAI, Apple, xAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Meta. These executives have been vocal in warning about the potential risks associated with the rapid advancement of AI technology.

While the US and China have traditionally been engaged in a global competition to develop cutting-edge technologies, the race to lead in AI has become a focal point. This rivalry has intensified after several tech executives publicly voiced concerns over the potential dangers of unchecked AI development. In contrast to these apprehensions, US President Trump has advocated for increased investment in AI, arguing that it is crucial for the US to outpace China in this domain.

Trump has publicly dismissed fears about the negative impacts of AI, asserting that China stands to benefit the most from its advancements. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump declared, "WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so." The administration has emphasized that leading in AI will also confer advantages in military and economic spheres, thereby heightening the stakes for both nations.

Xi's visit to the United States is anticipated to be marked by grand gestures, reminiscent of the treatment President Trump received during his visit to China earlier this year. This reciprocal approach underscores the US president's willingness to extend the utmost respect and hospitality to the Chinese leader. Melania Trump commented on the welcoming gesture to Fox & Friends, stating, "He’s coming on our soil, and we need to welcome them with the most respect."
