Tribal farmer killed in wild elephant attack in Idukki

A 47-year-old tribal farmer named Vijayan was tragically killed by a wild elephant in Idukki, India. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when Vijayan, who lived in the Panthadikkalam tribal settlement, was returning home from visiting a relative. As he crossed the road, he encountered the elephant, which he called 'Chakkakompan'.

Despite fleeing, the elephant caught up with him and trampled him to death. The elephant had been roaming in Vijayan's farmland the previous night. A rapid response team had issued a warning to residents to stay indoors, but Vijayan, thinking the elephant had left, ventured outside. This decision led to his fatal encounter with the animal.

Following the tragedy, local residents and Vijayan's family members protested for five hours, blocking authorities from moving the body. They demanded the relocation of three problematic elephants, a government job for one of Vijayan's family members, and the removal of illegal fencing on revenue lands that disrupts elephant migration paths.

The situation de-escalated after officials from Munnar Divisional Forest Officer Abhay Yadav and Periyar Tiger Reserve Assistant Wildlife Warden R. Lakshmi intervened. The decision was made to capture and relocate the problematic elephants from the Chinnakkanal region. The body was subsequently transported to the Idukki Government Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Vijayan is remembered by his wife, Devi, and four children - Aneesh, Bineesh, Sethu Lakshmi, and Vijayalakshmi.
