Brad Bird has reunited audiences with his retrofuturistic animated universe in the inaugural trailer for Ray Gunn. The first full trailer released by Netflix showcases both a departure from Bird's recent work and a nod to his classic style. In the trailer, Bird's signature flair, evident in hits like The Incredibles and Ratatouille, is unmistakably present.

The trailer introduces its star, private investigator Raymond Gunn, as he navigates a 1939-inspired Metropia, a sprawling city filled with a diverse cast of characters including aliens of various appearances, from cute to terrifying. The official synopsis describes the story as Raymond Gunn entangled in a mystery involving murder, aliens, and a multimedia sensation named Venus Nova.

The trailer's aesthetic suggests a deep dive into 1939, but with a contemporary twist that nods towards the noir genre, despite the genre not having fully blossomed until the 1940s. Bird's Ray Gunn promises a blend of aesthetics and genre elements, set to release in limited theaters, including select 70mm screenings, on December 4, with a Netflix debut on December 18.
