Thailand faces flash floods as downpours hit September 23–27

Thailand braces for flash floods as heavy rainfall grips the country from September 23 to 27, according to warnings from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). The department predicts very heavy rain in certain regions, increasing the likelihood of flash floods and runoff. The lower Northeast and East areas are expected to face the brunt of the downpours first, with the rain then spreading to North, Central Thailand, including Bangkok and neighboring provinces, and the South.

The cause of these severe weather conditions is a strong low-pressure system over central Vietnam's coast, which is set to traverse lower Northeast, East, and Central Thailand, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, along a monsoon trough extending across upper Thailand. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand is also anticipated to intensify.

Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant for heavy to very heavy rain and prolonged rainfall, which could prompt flash floods and runoff, particularly in foothills near waterways and low-lying areas. Travelers are advised to steer clear of flooded roads, especially low-lying routes prone to temporary inundation. Central Thailand, Bangkok, and its surrounding provinces are forecast to receive significant rainfall in numerous areas, with the potential for very heavy rain in select locations.

The TMD also cautions against open spaces, towering trees, unstable structures, and insecure advertising signs during thunderstorms. Sea conditions are expected to deteriorate as well, with waves in the upper Gulf of Thailand reaching 2 to 3 meters, rising above 3 meters during thunderstorms. In the lower Gulf and upper Andaman Sea, waves are projected to soar to approximately 2 meters and exceed this height during thunderstorms.

Mariners in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in areas impacted by thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Gulf of Thailand are recommended to remain onshore from September 24 to 27.
