Terrorism remains a major concern, Singapore to enter next phase of SGSecure movement: PM Wong

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong warned the public against complacency regarding the country's security during the 10th anniversary of the SGSecure movement. While Singapore has been fortunate in avoiding terrorist attacks so far, Wong expressed concern about the evolving threats. He emphasized that the SGSecure movement, launched in September 2016, aims to prepare Singaporeans to respond to terrorist attacks and that the government will step up efforts in this next phase.

The Ministry of Home Affairs acknowledged that while the public is generally aware and alert, public complacency and youth radicalisation remain key concerns. To address these issues, the SGSecure Advocate Programme will be expanded to include schools, workplaces, and other organizations. Additionally, a new integrated marketing and communications campaign will be launched next year with a new tagline and refreshed messaging.

The government also plans to review its advisories, particularly in relation to youth radicalisation, and explore new modes of digital engagement, such as through online gaming platforms. Wong stressed the importance of maintaining alertness and preparedness, as no security system can guarantee 100% protection. He urged Singaporeans to remain vigilant and take sensible action when they notice potential threats, rather than ignoring signs of abnormal behavior.
