State auditor sends key audit results of election watchdog to special prosecutor

The Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) has forwarded a portion of its investigation into the state election watchdog to an independent prosecutor's team, according to a report on Wednesday. The BAI conducted a financial audit of the National Election Commission (NEC) from July 6 to August 28, aiming to uncover any irregularities that may have contributed to the significant voting paper shortages during the June 3 elections.

However, the final audit results have not been released to the public yet. The data shared with the independent counsel team encompasses six cases concerning budget execution during major elections, including allegations of interference in bidding processes, unfair private contracts, and improper inspections, as these issues were deemed urgent enough to warrant immediate investigation.

The BAI did not provide additional details on the matter. The agency explained that they decided to share the data prior to the official audit announcement due to the limited investigation timeframe of the special prosecutor team, which is only 150 days.
