Ruto strikes new deal with Liberia as Boakai announces diplomatic mission in Kenya

President William Ruto has announced a renewed effort to bolster Kenya-Liberia relations following bilateral discussions with Liberian President Joseph Boakai during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The talks resulted in commitments to enhance trade and investment, expand cooperation on peace and security, and bolster diplomatic ties between the two African nations.

A key outcome was Liberia's decision to open a diplomatic mission in Kenya, a move anticipated to energize relations between Nairobi and Monrovia.

Ruto highlighted the significance of the planned diplomatic mission, stating that it would foster deeper engagement between the two countries. "Liberia's decision to open a diplomatic mission in Kenya will give fresh impetus to this partnership," Ruto remarked on his official social media account. The move aims to enhance diplomatic coordination, promote business exchanges, and strengthen personal connections.

The leaders also agreed to pursue closer economic cooperation, with both governments aiming to increase trade and attract investment. While Kenya and Liberia already maintain diplomatic relations, the discussions signal an intention to broaden cooperation into commercial partnerships and private-sector engagement. Ruto noted that Kenya and Liberia would collaborate beyond traditional diplomacy into commercial ventures.

In addition to economic cooperation, Kenya and Liberia plan to work closely on regional peace and security issues. This includes collaboration at the United Nations Security Council, with both nations committed to advancing stability across the region and supporting democratic development in South Sudan. Kenya's ongoing involvement in peace initiatives across the Horn of Africa and East Africa complements Liberia's experience from its post-conflict reconstruction and peacebuilding efforts.
