Russia pounds Kyiv with drones, killing 2 and wounding 41 before Zelenskyy’s UN address

Kyiv, Ukraine experienced drone attacks in daylight hours on Wednesday, hours before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly. These attacks resulted in two fatalities and 41 injuries within the city. Pockets of black smoke could be seen across Kyiv post the attack, indicative of fires set off by the drones.

This incident is part of a series of daily Russian attacks that continue to target Ukrainian civilians. Kyiv was not the only city hit; authorities reported damage to buildings in various parts of Ukraine. Zelenskyy had traveled to New York for the General Assembly, part of his diplomatic strategy to garner more international support for Ukraine's ongoing 4½-year conflict against Russia's invasion.

At the assembly, Zelenskyy called for continued restrictions on Russian oil revenues to prevent further financing of the war. "When someone gives Russia more money through trade, they give this war more time," he stated, emphasizing the need to limit trade with the aggressor. Zelenskyy had a prior meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has shown impatience with the lack of progress in peace talks and the rising aerial attacks.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated there are "no concrete plans" for a high-level meeting between U.S. and Russian officials to break the stalemate. Russian President Vladimir Putin is not expected to attend the U.N. gathering this year. The Polish military reported that a Russian military helicopter intruded into Poland's airspace near the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, indicating Russia's continued testing of air defense readiness.

Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine's focus on disrupting Russia's war financing rather than targeting oil, gasoline, and ports during his address in New York. He argued that Ukraine's priority is to halt Russia's ability to fund the war, prolong its duration, and intensify its destructive impact. Zelenskyy had earlier shared proposals for de-escalation in the war, emphasizing the need to stop Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid and ensure safe shipment of Ukrainian grain to global markets via the Black Sea, despite the ongoing war.

In Zaporizhzhia, two individuals aged 37 and 39 were wounded in an attack that set a shopping mall ablaze, consuming approximately 6,000 square meters of the structure before firefighters brought it under control. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its forces targeted Ukraine's military-industrial and energy sectors, logistics centers, and naval vessels during overnight strikes.

The ministry claimed that its air defenses intercepted over 500 Ukrainian drones across multiple Russian regions and those in Crimea, the Sea of Azov, and the Black Sea.
